Below: You want your homeschooling to be as successful as possible, but you can’t prepare for everything. Here are six tips that will help you avoid common roadblocks to a successful homeschool year.
When you make the decision to homeschool, you do it with the goal to be as successful as possible. Once you get into it though, you may realize that things come up for which you weren’t prepared.
The following six suggestions will help you avoid some common roadblocks that homeschoolers encounter so that you can have the successful experience you envision.
6 Tips to Make Homeschooling Successful
1. If you have a little one, homeschooling the older child may be difficult. Adopt a flexible schedule so you can take care of both children. Try to find lessons that can involve both children. It’s important to give each child the attention they need at their skill level, while not disrupting the development of each child.
2. Don’t restrict yourself to textbooks! Newspapers and fun things like comic books can provide a great way for children to learn. Current events can open up amazing discussions, so reading to your children or having them read timely articles is an exceptional way to learn. You will be teaching them the skills they need to analyze situations, which lasts a lifetime.
3. Even homeschooling teachers and students want to feel included. For that reason, you should both consider joining a homeschooling support group. Your student(s) will get to talk to other kids who understand the lifestyle and challenges of homeschooling. Likewise, you can get input, advice and general support from other parents who have already struggled with and succeeded at homeschooling.
Homeschooling can be a lonely path if you do not make an effort to seek out support. Many areas now have homeschooling co-ops, where parents in a community work together to share resources and offer help. These provide a valuable social outlet for your child, whose opportunities to make friends differ from a child in a public school.
4. Homeschooling can benefit from thinking outside of the box. Many homeschooling resources can be purchased, but if you put the effort into it, you can also make many resources yourself.
For instance, flash cards are a valuable asset when you are teaching. See if you can get your children to help for some extra fun. These resources are also available for free from Miss Humblebee’s Academy when you become a member.
5. Contact the Homeschool Association of your state to learn what laws and regulations you need to follow. State laws vary, so you may have to register yourself as a homeschool or private school, or administer standardized tests. You’ll also want to avoid having truancy charges filed, so you’ll need to contact the school board to let them know about your plans to homeschool your children.
6. To help your student learn even the most complex concepts, it helps to understand what he or she finds most interesting. It is much easier to engage a student who has taken an active interest in the subject at hand. As the teacher, you have the responsibility for maintaining structure but this does not mean your pupil can’t determine the direction as well. Seeking your student’s input facilitates active learning.
With the plethora of information available on the subject, you can prepare yourself to dive head first into homeschooling. This will prepare you for giving your child the best education. With your expert planning and teaching, your child will be able to meet all the challenges he will face in life.
